National Sports Museum Charter

The National Sports Museum is a collaborative Australian museum that displays sporting artefacts. The Museum consolidates and enhances the MCG’s standing as Australia’s premier repository of sports-related collections.

On display are items owned by the Museum, or on loan from a number of pre-eminent sporting bodies and individuals.

These include the Melbourne Cricket Club, the Melbourne Cricket Ground Trust through the Australian Gallery of Sport and Olympic Museum, the Australian Football League, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Australian Racing Museum and Cricket Australia.

Other collecting entities that contribute artefacts for display at the Museum include the Victorian Olympic Committee, Australian Olympic Committee, and several national sporting associations.

Displays are augmented by a range of contemporary multimedia exhibits.

Over time, further sporting bodies will be attracted to the National Sports Museum, which aims to become:

  • The national focal point for the values and achievements of Australian sportsmen and women and the organisations that represent them.
  • The embodiment of the notion that the pursuit of excellence at the highest levels is consistent with a commitment to fair play.
  • An inspiration to the youth of Australia to be active, to set high goals and to achieve.
  • A showcase for the broad spectrum of Australian sport, not just the sports played at the MCG.
  • A museum that treats with appropriate respect the personal memorabilia loaned or donated by leading sports people.
  • A leading entertainment and tourism attraction.

The National Sports Museum is a company limited by guarantee operated by the Melbourne Cricket Club.  The capital development of the National Sports Museum was funded by the Australian Government.
