A National Museum of Australia travelling exhibition, League of Legends – 100 Years of Rugby League in Australia, has opened the trophy cabinets of league clubs around Australia to shed some light on the fascinating history of the League game.
The exhibition, which opens on April 7 at the National Sports Museum, brings together treasures of the game, as well as early posters, programs, medallions, footballs and boots.
Rugby league great Wally Lewis offically opened the exhibition.
Trophy highlights include the iconic Winfield Cup, inspired by the classic photograph of the post-match embrace of muddied footballers Arthur Summons and Norm Proven, and also the first State of Origin shield.
The exhibition also includes one of the most important rugby league objects - the mahogany, Royal Agricultural Society Shield which was awarded to Rugby League’s first superstar and pioneer Herbert “Dally” Messenger in 1913.
League of Legends is a 100-year journey through the history of this rebel sport. From the early days of formation, to State of Origin, the ‘Tina Turner’ marketing years, pay TV wars and Melbourne Storm’s premiership success.
League of Legends was developed by the National Museum of Australia together with the Centenary of Rugby League Committee.
