The Australian Football League and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship launched a new curriculum package, You Can Kick Goals, today in the National Sports Museum at the MCG.

You Can Kick Goals is a school curriculum package that uses Australian Football to teach important community and cultural values in Australian society.

The curriculum package comprises three distinct teaching manuals and student handbooks for the primary and lower secondary school year levels.

Department of Immigration and Citizenship state director John Williams said Australian football is a great vehicle to acknowledge differences of culture, ethnicity, language and faith.

“Australian football has a fantastic history of embracing players and communities from diverse backgrounds, with names such as Barassi, Jesaulenko, Koutoufides and Daicos part of the game’s heritage and today’s players including Harry O’Brien, Bachar Houli and Nick Malceski.

“The You Can Kick Goals resource not only promotes Australian football, but also highlights the importance of teamwork, leadership and values such as fairness respect and harmony,” Mr Williams said.

The You Can Kick Goals resources will be available to teachers from January 2009 via www.aflschools.com.au.
