School Visits

Overview

Learning beyond the classroom is a powerful way to engage students in meaningful curriculum. The National Sports Museum boasts a growing list of resources that are applicable, adaptable and appropriate.

We offer online resources, presenter led programs and tailor made programs.

Online Resources:

At the National Sports Museum we delight in seeing our resources being used by many groups that are serious about making the most of their extension education programs.

The 15 resource kits in this educational program have been have been developed by or on behalf of the National Sports Museum.

The National Sports Museum provides rich learning opportunities for primary and secondary students in an exciting new context showcasing the importance of sport and sportsmanship for Australians.

Each activity includes detailed Teacher Notes and Student Worksheets which can be downloaded as PDF files. The activities have been mapped to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), Levels 3–5.

This National Sports Museum educational resource is not just for sports fans. The activities focus on the richness sport has brought to our history, culture, identity and lifestyle. They emphasise interpersonal and disciplinary learning, and enable students to understand and appreciate the value and significance of sport in our society.

A key theme of the National Sports Museum is ‘moments that made us’. Enjoy the journey as you and your students discover some of those moments.

The National Sports Museum acknowledges the support and contribution of other stakeholder partners in the development of this education program:

Presenter lead programs:

EYE Spy (Early Years Education)
EYE Spy enables small groups to focus on objects in the museum and connect them to the stories of the owner of the objects.

The 30-minute session moves to three locations and examines footwear and the stories of Catherine Freeman, Nadia Comaneci, footballers and Sub Zero. There is no extra charge, but bookings are essential.

Writing Sports
Designed for year 9 and 10 this program begins with a modified tour of the MCG. Students are given short writing tasks to “write on the run” just as a coach might have to someone about to face the media. Students also experience the MCG through the eyes of sports journalists and are provoked into writing in various sporting genre styles.

The activity concludes with a self-guided task in the National Sports Museum. A teacher resource is also available. There is no extra charge, but bookings are essential.

Tailor-Made programs
We can also offer to speak to groups about careers, event and sports management, stadium management and occupational health and safety. There is no extra charge, but bookings are essential.

In 2012 we will be offering for limited periods:

Meet An Olympian . A program where groups spend 235 minutes with an Olympian and discuss the journey to the Olympics, their great moments and the moments that inspired them. A $2 per student charge is added for this program. Bookings are essential.

Our First Olympic Champions . In term 2 we will be offering a play every Wednesday. The play is about our first Olympic champions: Edwin Flack (1896) and Sarah “Fanny” Durack, 1912. This doubly woven biography is fun filled, historic and poignant.  A $2 per student charge is added for this program. Bookings are essential.
